The Collective Qi Field

If you take my classes, from time to time you’ve heard me invite you to send good energy to a fellow member of the group who is sick or suffering. We intuitively understand how this works, I think. But what exactly, are we doing when we send good energy?

Each time we practice Qigong, we reinforce our connection to something beyond ourselves: the great mystery of aliveness called the Tao.  From the very start of class, we connect with the Tao by getting grounded, relaxing our bodies, and clearing and expanding our minds. This is how we join the Qi field: the vast, ever-changing web of aliveness both within us and all around us. We can attune to the Qi field either individually, or as a group. When we practice together, that collective energy is multiplied exponentially. Like sound and light waves, Qi both expands and can be directed.

Sima Qian, a famous historian from the Han Dynasty, writes that the Tao “shifts with the times and changes in response to things.” This week, the shifts in the Tao have included at least three serious health crises for members of our group. The current zeitgeist isn’t very positive right now, either, so let’s all align with the greater good and, together, shine some positive light. Relax. Breathe. Open your mind. Harmonize with the healing. Your strength will help keep things in tune.

Here’s some final comforting wisdom from Sima Qian to encourage us: The general drift of its (the Tao’s) teaching is simple and easy to hold on to: much is achieved with little effort.”
