Earth Phase: Late Summer

Hello, Friends!

I hope you’ve had a wonderful month of August. Here in upstate NY, tomatoes redden in my garden, cucumbers appear overnight on plants that just won’t quit, and marigolds keep blooming like crazy. At the same time, dry leaves have begun to litter the lawn and dusk comes earlier. It’s “Late Summer”, the earth phase of the Chinese Agricultural Calendar. This can be an unpredictable time: hurricane season, a.c. one day, flannel the next. The exuberant Yang energy of summer is moving inward toward Yin, leaving some of us feeling unsettled and maybe even a bit anxious.

In Qigong, we thrive through these changes by aligning our energy to the precious gifts of each season. Late Summer’s earth phase reminds us of the lush ripeness of the harvest, a sweet time of abundance and nurture. In our practice, we focus on supporting the health of the stomach, spleen, and pancreas and our ability to digest and be nourished. Emotionally, we address the “indigestion” of unsettled, anxious feelings, and transform worry and rumination into clarity of mind and a sense of being grounded and in balance.

What a perfect time for us to return to regularly scheduled online Qigong classes! We’ll begin tomorrow, Tuesday, September 3. I will also teach in-person this Friday, via the Millbrook Library, and on Saturday at the Sharon Library, where I’m offering a 90- minute workshop on Qigong for the Earth Season.  (See below for all details, and more.)

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Schedule Notes:

Our regular Zoom Qigong classes resume this Tuesday, at 9:30 AM. Same time, same place. 😊

Free Live/In-person/Zoom Qigong at Millbrook Library: Friday, September 6, 10-11. Please contact millbrooklibrary.org to register if you’re a first-timer. Weather permitting, we’ll meet at Bennett Park. Otherwise, please use the Friendly La. entrance to the library. Hope to see you there!

Qigong for Late Summer: In-person workshop, Hotchkiss Library, Sharon CT. 10:30 to 12. Please contact the library to register: 860-364-5041, or info@hotchkisslibrary.org. This is a good opportunity to take a deep dive into understanding and augmenting the energy of the season through exercise, meditation, and acupressure.

Saturday, September 14 at 10 AM, “Qigong Moon-Inspired Exercises” at Innisfree Gardens, in Millbrook, NY. This year the garden’s community day is celebrating the Japanese Moon Festival, and I’ll help start it off by teaching moon-inspired Qigong exercises. Afterward, you can enjoy the rest of the wonderful activities planned for the day at the garden. Free for locals, $10 admission if you’re out-of-town.
