I just returned from NYC where I had the pleasure of seeing my Qigong student Janet in person, after working with her only on Zoom since March. She was painting benches at her community garden and gamely did a “Between Heaven and Earth” pose. Janet gave me permission to share her age, too: she’s 85, very fit and has the energy of an enthusiastic 40 year old. Now, to be fair, she has strong “Original Qi”, meaning her genetic inheritance is good to begin with. However, as for all of us, what she does with the genetic cards she has been dealt greatly influences how much energy she currently has. This is sometimes called building ones “energetic bank account”. That’s what the “gong” in Qigong refers to; it means “cultivate” or “grow”.
How to keep adding to your energy bank account? Manage stress. Connect with nature. Learn how to handle negativity. Move your body freely but without strain or force. Above all, practice and learn to be in the moment: to breathe, relax, and know that everything constantly transforms and changes. By doing so, we cultivate clarity of mind, a compassionate heart, and strong, healthy body. These are useful skills when the outside world feels out of control. That’s one big reason why Janet and the rest of us are doing Qigong these days. It’s our life-line to staying positive, healthy, and connected to a supportive community of other men and women doing the same thing. Please join us!
