The Healing Hum

“Overall, the musical hum of the receptors as they bind to their many ligands, often in the far-flung parts of the organism, creates an integration of structure and function, that allows the organism to run smoothly, intelligently.”

-from Molecules of Emotion; the Science Behind Mind-Body, by Candace B.Pert

“…the musical hum of the receptors…” As soon as I read this I thought “Ah ha! Another place where cutting edge Western science meets Qigong!” In Qigong we learn that everything is energy, and energy is vibration. Some vibrations move slowly (think of a stone’s molecular structure) and some move very fast (our thoughts). Through Qigong we learn to sense and feel the subtle vibrations of our own energy whether in the form of body sensations, or emotions, or thought and spirit.  This sensing of energy doesn’t require special talent, only a bit of practice and an open, curious mind. It can be as simple as noticing how after doing the spinal warm-up exercises at the start of class, there’s a pleasant buzzing or tingling sensation as the blood, oxygen, synovial fluid and lymph starts to move around and our breathing naturally expands and deepens. Moving is a natural way to connect to and enhance the hum of our body’s aliveness.

Sensing our bodies as vibrational energy opens incredible possibilities for change and healing. Qigong is, above all, a healing art and science, first developed centuries ago to improve health and prolong life. Ancient as it is, its concepts are being proven true as present-day technology learns to measure what was previously mysterious. “Psychoneuroimmunology” is the 21st C term to describe how our minds interact with our bodies, and how the vibrations, “the musical hum of receptors” and other physiological processes enable continual growth, transformation, and healing.

During the present circumstances, it’s especially important to keep our immune systems tuned and purring. With Qigong we practice cultivating (that’s what the “gong” in Qigong means) the hum and flow of our aliveness, our well-being, by learning to move with relaxation, ease, breath, and mindfulness.
